Artist Statement

Sydney Bischoff is an artist who utilizes various mediums in an exploration of the unnoticed. Her main materials consist of Ink, watercolor, oil paints, and ceramics. One of Sydney’s core questions she explores through her work is: How can the insignificant become significant through art? When the world is moving so quickly it can be difficult to notice the little things that surround us and can change the way we see things. She wants us to remember all of these small moments exist whether we appreciate them or not. Looking at the past it is clear how many moments create a beautiful, messy picture that forms each life. This is reflected in the attention to detail and craftsmanship that is put into each piece of her work.

Variety is provided through the various mediums she uses. The Permanence of ink is important to the work that Sydney creates. Each moment exists and cannot be taken away, so it makes sense that it is the same for the work. We cannot erase the ink or delete it. Mistakes will happen, but they can still contribute to a beautiful picture. Sydney’s watercolors complement her use of ink pens by providing color and whimsy. Sydney’s oil paintings elevate otherwise forgotten moments to a point of recognition. Her paintings focus on the natural world and highlight the beauty of simple moments while focusing on effective use of color and light. They are given even more value through detailed craftsmanship. Her ceramics work focuses on well-crafted, thrown pieces of pottery while adding detailed sculptures. These sculptures emphasize the fragility of life and the sometimes-temporary nature of the things we care about. These pieces are meant to capture our attention and inspire appreciation for the detail and beauty of the creation surrounding us.

Psalm 19:1

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands.
